DeWalt Router DW618B3E

Hey DeWalt!!  What were you thinking of when you designed this part?   Shame on someone.   This part should be a recall before someone gets hurt!!!

I recently purchased the DW61B3E  3 Piece Router Kit (see motor in pictures below)  and with the very first use, I had troubles trying to free the roll pin from the collet and nut so I had to remover the motor from the base.   Once I removed the router bit and pressed on the button several times,  the roll pin slid back and freed the collet.     I inserted the router bit and tightened the collet the second time.  Again I had to press in the locking button several times before I could turn the router motor freely.    While doing a test cut,  the roll pin worked it's way in to the locking nut and made one heck of a sound,   Lucky the Off - On switch is  located of a fast an easy shut off..

While inspecting the router,  I noticed that the Roll / Pin was partly out and because of the free play  in the pin, The pin would hit the Nut on the Collet..

Knowing this was a new router and just removed from the case for the first time, I decided to see what was wrong.  I removed the motor from the housing, removed the router bit for the third time with the aid of my "Porter Cable Router Wrenches" and did a visual inspection.

As you can see in the pictures below  Fig #1  The locking button does not sit properly.    I removed the three screws in the locking device and found that the roll pin and the spring came out of the black button.  Realizing this pin was a pressure fit. I placed the pin in to the proper location and tapped it in place with a hammer.  I placed the spring over the pin and inserted it in to the locking housing.  To my surprise, the pin soon slipped out of the black button and would again slide against the shaft below the collet..

I also noticed that the locking housing or the motor base is of poor quality. When the three screws are tightened (doing the front screw first)  The two screws to the rear can not sit properly causing the rear of the locking housing to raise and allowing the black button the pop out.

For my safety and for the safety of others around me, I  removed this 'Locking Device' (spring and Roll Pin)  from my router and will go back to using my two wrenches from the "Porter Cable Router" to insert and remove my router bits.

Because I have many other DeWalt Tools and I would personally recommend them to others, I am posting this on my web site as a way to warn others of my happenings with this DeWalt Router and the locking device.    Feel free to email me with your comments on the link below.     I will also send a link to this page to Dewalt and post their comments later..    Good Luck with your projects..   John

DeWalt, What were you thinking of when you designed this part?   A Simple "T" type pin with a compression fit would have solved this problem.  Better yet; Charge us $5.00 more for the router and get this part redesigned with the "T" type pin and get it mold injected into the button.     Even after several attempts, the pin does not sit properly in the button and will slip out in due time.     Look at the picture below..
